Building the Future: Meet Security’s Rising Apprentices

  • Security Systems & Software

Across Gratte Brothers, our apprentices are the future of our business. Alongside their talent, they bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm, and a drive to learn. Through hands-on learning and mentorship, they gain the skills and confidence to excel in their chosen careers.

In January, we met Eva Aydin & Ruby Hornby who travelled from our Warrington office to our London HQ to complete a placement with us as part of their apprenticeship programmes. During their work experience with the marketing department, we had the opportunity to speak with Gratte Brothers | Security Systems & Software (aka GBSM)’s Apprentice Help Desk Coordinator, Ruby, and Apprentice Administrator, Eva, about their apprenticeship journey so far and where they hope to be in the future.

Why did you choose to pursue an apprenticeship scheme at Gratte Brothers Security Management?

Eva: “I felt that an apprenticeship would be the best option for me as it’s a more practical approach to learning, as well as gaining experience within a professional work environment. I also believed the security industry to be interesting and knew there would be a wide range of opportunities.”

Ruby: “I saw this as a great opportunity to learn whilst working on the job and knew I could develop my skills and knowledge efficiently, whilst gaining a qualification.”

What has been your biggest challenge so far and how have you overcome this?

Eva: “Adjusting to a full-time work environment was difficult at first but I grew to love my day-to-day routine. Also, balancing my course with my workload was a struggle but I learned how to prioritise tasks as well as manage my time effectively.”

Ruby: “My biggest challenge so far has been balancing my time between my apprenticeship course and daily work tasks as each day can look different from a helpdesk perspective in terms of workload. To overcome this, I know I can rely on my team to assist me in picking up tasks and I plan my course via a timetable.”

Why do you enjoy working for GBSM?

Eva: “I enjoy working for GBSM as I have a very good relationship with my colleagues in the office and was welcomed into a positive environment. A year into the company, I have gained lots of knowledge surrounding my role as well as the security industry and I am excited to continue to grow.”

Ruby: “Having started at Gratte Brothers only a few months ago, I have found everyone to be welcoming and supportive and believe this is a great company to work for. I am looking forward to developing in my role in the upcoming future.”

Where do you hope to be in 5 years?

Eva: “I wish to continue learning and do more educational courses, more in the direction of finance, as my current commercial role I find to be enjoyable. I hope to have progressed down the commercial route in 5 years and make the most of my opportunity at Gratte Brothers.”

Ruby: “I hope to progress further within the business, taking as many opportunities as possible. I would also like to continue in Business qualifications to further my skills and apply them to my role in the future.”

At Gratte Brothers, we are proud to partner with Skills for Security, our preferred course provider. They offer tailored courses for both engineers and administrators, designed to help apprentices gain valuable qualifications within the security industry. With their flexible hybrid learning approach combining online and in-person lessons, apprentices receive the support they need to succeed in their unique roles.

It’s a privilege to support Ruby and Eva’s continued development and we are looking forward to watching them flourish in their careers.
