Our Secret to Being Shortlisted for the IWFM Awards: A Journey to Net Zero

  • Gratte Brothers Group,
  • Building Services Maintenance

Gratte Brothers Group’s commitment to sustainability is deeply rooted as one of our core values. Our secret to being shortlisted actually isn’t a secret at all! We regularly communicate on our progress regarding our Group-wide sustainability initiative, Journey to Net Zero. This initiative has been embraced by every team in the Group, and we are proud to be on track towards achieving net zero. As part of our mission, we have set ambitious but achievable targets to reduce our emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3 and contribute to a more sustainable future.

A Data-Driven Approach to Net Zero

To ensure the accuracy and feasibility of our sustainability goals, we have partnered with Normative, a specialist carbon accounting platform. Through rigorous assessments of our carbon footprint across all three scopes, we have gained valuable insights into our environmental impact. This data-driven approach has enabled us to develop a comprehensive strategy to reduce our emissions and achieve net zero by 2050.

Key Initiatives Driving Our Journey

Our Journey to Net Zero initiative encompasses a range of strategies aimed at reducing our environmental footprint. Some of our key initiatives include:

  • Supplier Engagement: Recognising the significant impact of our supply chain on our carbon footprint, we have implemented a robust supplier engagement strategy. By gathering information on our suppliers’ sustainability practices, we have identified opportunities for collaboration and identified areas where we can drive emissions reductions.
  • Renewable Energy Adoption: We have transitioned our offices to 100% renewable energy, significantly reducing our scope two emissions. Our site operations are also actively pursuing renewable energy solutions.
  • Electric Fleet Upgrades: To minimise our transportation-related emissions, we are transitioning to a predominantly hybrid and electric fleet. By replacing vehicles at the end of their natural lifespan, we are avoiding unnecessary waste and reducing our carbon footprint.
  • Energy Efficiency in Buildings: We have invested in efficient CAFM systems, building insulation, and regular process reviews to optimise our energy consumption. By focusing on natural gas and implementing energy-saving measures, we have made significant strides in reducing our building-related emissions.
  • Waste Management: We are committed to minimising our waste footprint by sending zero waste to landfill from our offices and significantly reducing landfill contributions from our sites. Through partnerships with organisations like The Community Wood Recycling Project, we have implemented effective waste management strategies.
  • Sustainability Practices and Awareness: We have integrated sustainable practices into our daily operations and fostered a culture of environmental awareness among our employees. The Gratte Green Committee plays a vital role in promoting sustainability initiatives and engaging our workforce.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Our Sustainability Efforts

The Gratte Green Committee is central to our pursuit of net zero. Comprised of dedicated staff members from diverse backgrounds, the committee supports the sustainability team in achieving our environmental goals. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and accessibility, we ensure that everyone has a voice in our sustainability journey.

A Collaborative Approach to Success

Our journey to net zero has been a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders. From inception to delivery, we have engaged employees, suppliers, and other partners to ensure buy-in and support. By leveraging research, benchmarks, and effective communication strategies, we have successfully mobilised our organisation to achieve our sustainability goals.

Measuring Our Impact

Through rigorous data collection and analysis, we have been able to measure the impact of our initiatives. We have tracked reductions in our carbon footprint across scopes 1, 2, and 3, as well as the positive outcomes for our employees and the broader community.

Looking Ahead

As we continue our journey towards net zero, we are committed to exploring new opportunities for innovation and improvement. By building upon our successes and addressing emerging challenges, we aim to make a lasting contribution to a sustainable future.
