Since commercial operations commenced in the 1930’s Gatwick Airport has grown to become the UK’s second largest airport with the North and South Terminals serving over 45 million passengers on 280,000 flights from 143 aircraft stands.
The South Terminal was opened in 1958 and covers an area of 160,000m2. Gratte Brothers was appointed Principal Contractor to undertake the Installation of 2 new modular boilers in the Eastern and North Plant rooms located on the roof of this operational terminal over a 10 month programme.
Works included the replacement of the existing High Temperature Hot Water (HTHW) system pipework with new Low Temperature Hot Water pipework, to connect to the newly installed modular gas fired boilers and controls.
The installation was designed and coordinated around existing equipment and plant and included the future provision for an additional boiler to be installed.
Valves and pressure gauges were installed at low level on the new distribution pipework serving the existing AHU’s to facilitate access and maintenance.
Other specialist contractors were engaged by Gratte Brothers to undertake work on site which included the removal of part of the Plant Room wall to provide access for the delivery of the new boilers.
