Gratte Brothers Building Services & Engineering was appointed by the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) to upgrade the electrical services to No. 1 Court at their world-famous sporting venue at Wimbledon. The upgraded electrical infrastructure was specifically designed to serve the new retractable roof as well as 15 new high spec hospitality suites.
Working alongside the main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, Gratte Brothers provided the electrical services in phases spanning three years as work had to be paused annually to accommodate the staging of The Championships.
The installation included new switchboards and extensions; transformers, HV cabling and associated Durasteel enclosures; Energy Management System; containment for other principal services; general lighting and power; services to specialist areas including hospitality suites, Debenture areas, central court and ancillary rooms.
Tennis champions and spectators are now fully protected from the vagaries of the English climate by the new retractable roof consisting of 80,000 square feet of fabric supported by 11 new 100 tonne steel trusses.
This truly unique and complex project was successfully completed in time for The Championships, Wimbledon in 2019.
