Planet

As a business, we are focused on the future and committed to doing our part in protecting the planet, and have successfully retained our Environmental Management ISO 14001 certification for over a decade. We take sustainability seriously and take an extensive view of our impact on the environment: from waste and biodiversity to water usage and carbon calculation. Our approach is rooted in setting realistic targets based on meticulously measured data, including the dataset from our partnership with carbon calculation platform, Normative.

When considering our carbon footprint, we take a comprehensive approach; considering our scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions to give us a full picture of our carbon footprint. Regular reviews of our processes, products, and vehicle fleet both on-site and in our offices help us to identify areas where we can make improvements in the most environmentally friendly ways possible. By continuously measuring and evaluating our environmental impact, we are able to stay accountable to our sustainability goals and work towards reducing our carbon footprint while contributing to a more sustainable future for all.

Journey to Net Zero

Our sustainability journey is summarised by our new initiative “Journey to Net Zero”. This initiative encompasses all the efforts we are undertaking to support the United Nation’s climate target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. Primarily, we have set the goal of reaching net zero emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050. Read our Journey to Net Zero Roadmap for more details.

Partnering with carbon calculation platform, Normative, we have calculated our carbon emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3. What makes this approach unique is that many companies only consider their scopes 1 & 2 emissions when attempting to reach net zero emissions. In fact, Normative estimate that 91% of businesses don’t measure their emissions fully. To give you an indication of scale, scope 3 accounts for 97% of our business’s total emissions, and this proportion isn’t uncommon.

How We Protect The Planet On Site

One of our values as a company is Protecting the Planet. To ensure we commit to that promise,  we’re taking tangible steps on our sites to reduce waste and support the circular economy. By working with innovative partners and adopting eco-friendly practices, we’re not only minimising our environmental impact but also giving back to local communities. Here’s just some of the sustainable initiatives we have in place on-site.

Environmental Report

In 2023, we implemented some exciting improvements to processes across Gratte Brothers Group. Now, well into the second year of our Journey to Net Zero, we are bolstering our datasets and making tangible progress towards our key milestones. We will continue to report our progress in our annual reports, as well as smaller, more frequent updates throughout the year.

Boosting Biodiversity

Alongside our Journey to Net Zero (which looks at our scope 1,2, 3 emissions), we are actively inciting positive change through environmental improvements. For example, the outside area of our King’s Cross HQ features ‘Air Bee’n’Bees’ – wall-mounted insect hotels designed to boost local bio-diversity. On our selected principal contractor sites, we also install flowerboxes, bird and bat boxes to help support local wildlife and pollinators.

Group Sustainability Manager, Alice Kilner

“Our great holistic commitment to sustainability focuses on key areas including waste, biodiversity and emissions. We are looking ahead with positivity regarding our net zero journey, and are excited to collaborate industry-wide to drive positive change”

Environmental Volunteering

The Great British Spring Clean

To coincide with Recycle Week, Group Sustainability Manager, Alice Kilner organised local litter picks for our offices in London and Stevenage. Groups of volunteers braved the elements with equipment provided by the local council to help clean up the areas local to our London and Stevenage offices to improve it for the community.
